Notice of the Fan Jinshi Award for Religious Archaeology

Mrs.Fan Jinshi, Honorary Director of Dunhuang Academy and distinguished alumna of Peking University, has devoted her life to the preservation of cultural heritage and archaeological research in Dunhuang. For sixty years, she has made outstanding contributions to the protection, research, and promotion of the Dunhuang caves, as well as the research of Dunhuang Studies. She has been honored with several national titles, including "Pioneer of Reform" and "Outstanding Contributor to Cultural Heritage Protection." On May 4th, 2023, during Peking University’s 125th anniversary celebration, Mrs. Fan returned to Peking University and donated 10 million RMB to establish the Fan Jinshi Education Fund, supporting academic research, talent cultivation, international exchanges, and the development of relevant academic institutions in the fields of Dunhuang Studies and archaeology.


Starting in 2024, the Fan Jinshi Education Fund will establish the Fan Jinshi Award for Academic Achievement in Religious Archaeology, which will be used to reward  significant academic achievements in the field of religious archaeology from the previous year. The aim is to encourage domestic and international researchers in religious archaeology to continue pursuing academic innovation and to promote the development of religious archaeology research.


I. Eligibility Criteria

1. The applicant must have published or publicly released academic works (books or papers) in 2024 that meet academic standards.

2. The content must focus on religious archaeology research.

3. The academic achievement should have a broad academic perspective, demonstrate originality and innovation, and have significant academic and social value.


II. Award Standards and Distribution

The total prize fund is 100,000 RMB per year.

Each year, six outstanding academic achievements will be selected, with the followingallocation:

·First Prize: 1 recipient, 30,000 RMB

·Second Prize: 2 recipients, 20,000 RMB each

·Third Prize: 3 recipients, 10,000 RMB each


III. Evaluation Method
Applicants must submit their application materials by the specified deadline. The evaluation will be carried out by the Fan Jinshi Religious Archaeology Academic Achievement Award Evaluation Committee of Peking University, consisting of experts from relevant fields who will comprehensively review andevaluate the submissions.
