讲座简介:

In pre-colonial times, the Lower Mississippi Valley was home to some of the most complex societies in eastern North America. One aspect of this complexity was the presence of monumental architecture, which took the form of earthen mounds. Using data from more than 50 years of survey and excavation the Natchez Bluffs region, I examine the relationships between regional population size and the scale of mound construction, and consider how both these factors changed through time. I then focus on the results of my multiple seasons of excavations at the Feltus Mound, which shed additional light on how these mounds were used. The appearance at this site of a large building on a mound summit, possibly an elite residence, correlates with some of the key changes in the settlement patterns discussed previously.
