This last lecture describes some of my early experiences at the British Museum but also refers to some of the major topics I discussed in the three other talks. It is in four parts.
Part 1 introduces the British Museum and the range of the many different collections in the museum. They include world art and archaeology today. But when the museum was founded in the 18th century it also included animals, insects and rocks, that is, the natural world, now in the Natural History Museum. More than half of the building was occupied by manuscripts and books, now transferred to the British Library.
Part 2. In 1977, the director asked me to organise an exhibition on animals in paintings, sculpture, carving and even coins. I had free choice to design the exhibition subjects and chose the materials with the help of the curators from different departments. This was exciting, as I could visit the storage rooms of all the departments of the museum and gained a lot of information and valuable experience.
Part 3. In 1982-84 I was encouraged to suggest a topic and develop the content for the special exhibition room. The material of this exhibition has been published in Chinese as the Lotus and the Dragon. I had always been puzzled by the flower patterns on blue and white porcelains of the Yuan and Ming periods. These I found in ancient Mediterranean designs. I traced their journey across Eurasia with Buddhism, as the scrolls travelled with a complete architectural package.
Part 4. The Library and the Department of Prints and Drawings tell us a different story. Here we see the invention of both paper and printing in China. These were major advances and changed societies across Eurasia, among these were Buddhists, Sogdian Zoroastrians, Muslims and Christians. In the Prints and Drawings department we find images of Chinese garden rocks and their impact on Western prints and even Western architecture.
