The Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture (CASSS), founded by Rosemary Cramp was formally established in 1972. It started as and remains a team endeavour, supported through multiple academic and student research contributions and represents one of the most significant long-term archaeological and art-historical research projects undertaken in Britain. As the project approaches completion, with national coverage of pre-Conquest carved stone monuments and a comprehensive digital corpus nearly achieved, this lecture reflects on its scholarly legacy and explores new directions for early medieval stone sculpture studies.
Drawing on more than fifty years of research and recent collaborative initiatives supported through the Worked in Stone project, the lecture assesses how approaches to carved stone monuments have evolved beyond traditional concerns of typology, chronology and style. It highlights emerging interdisciplinary perspectives that emphasise production, materiality, monument biography, landscape context, sensory engagement, memory, political agency and audience reception. These approaches are reshaping understandings of how sculptures functioned within early medieval social, religious and commemorative worlds.
The lecture also considers the transformative potential of digital resources, applied scientific methods and comparative studies– not least cross-temporal and geographic perspectives on the production and meaning of human-stone entanglements in time and space. The completion of CASSS is a stepping off point presenting opportunities for large-scale, integrated analysis of carved stone monuments and provides a foundation for a richer, more holistic understanding of the creation, use, meaning and long-term biographies of early medieval sculpture.
由Rosemary Cramp创立的《盎格鲁-撒克逊石雕集成》（Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture，CASSS）于1972年正式建立。项目自创立之初便是一项团队协作工程，并一直依托多代学者与学生的研究贡献持续推进，现已成为英国最重要的长期考古学与艺术史研究项目之一。随着项目接近完成——对英格兰诺曼征服前雕刻石质纪念物的全国性覆盖以及综合数字语料库的建设均已接近完成——本次讲座将回顾CASSS的学术遗产，并探讨早期中世纪石雕研究的新方向。
基于五十余年的研究积累，以及“Worked in Stone”项目支持下近期开展的合作研究，本次讲座将考察雕刻石质纪念物研究如何逐步超越传统上对类型学、年代学与风格的关注，并重点介绍一系列正在发展的跨学科视角，包括制作过程、物质性、纪念物生命史、景观语境、感官参与、记忆、政治能动性与受众接受等。这些方法正在重新塑造我们对于石雕如何在早期中世纪的社会、宗教与纪念世界中发挥作用的理解。
讲座还将讨论数字资源、应用科学方法与比较研究所具有的变革潜力，尤其关注跨时段、跨地域的比较视角，以重新思考人与石材在时间和空间中的相互缠结，以及这种关系的生产方式与意义。CASSS的完成并非终点，而是一个新的起点：它为雕刻石质纪念物的大规模、综合性分析创造了条件，也为更丰富、更整体地理解早期中世纪石雕的制作、使用、意义及其长期生命史奠定了基础。
主讲人简介
Sarah Jane Semple现为英国杜伦大学考古学教授。她长期在杜伦大学考古学系任教，是英国早期中世纪考古、景观考古和石雕研究领域的领军学者之一，并曾担任系主任，近年当选英国国家学术院院士。
她的研究主要聚焦于早期中世纪英格兰与北海世界的景观考古、王权与宗教空间、葬俗与纪念性景观，以及盎格鲁—撒克逊石雕与物质文化研究。她主持并参与多个大型研究项目，尤其在英格兰早期中世纪石雕的系统整理、数字化记录与综合研究方面具有突出贡献，相关工作建立在该领域五十余年的持续积累之上，并推动了对英格兰早期国家形成、身份表达和宗教政治景观的重新认识。
Sarah Semple教授学术成果丰硕，代表性研究包括关于盎格鲁-撒克逊时期景观、宗教、政治与史前遗址再利用的多部专著和论文。她于2024年获得英国国家学术院景观考古学奖章，2026年起担任Society for Medieval Archaeology主席，显示出她在国际中世纪考古学界的重要学术地位与影响力。
