第一讲:何为考古学?——还原未知、身份认同与文化归属

What is Archaeology? Revealing Unknown, Identity and Cultural Belonging

Over the last hundred years or more archaeology had discovered a vast amount that we did not know, from human evolution to many Holocene developments spanning the Neolithic to the early dynastic times and beyond. If our sense of ourselves in the present depends partly on our understanding of the past, how have the results of archaeology changed our understanding of ourselves and others? Can archaeology also open up new ways of living in the future? I will provide a sketch of some of the broader contributions of archaeology in revealing unknown pasts, before using some case studies from China and Europe to explore issues of identity and cultural belonging in a little more depth.

第二讲:何为世界考古学?——人类文化的差异与联结

What is World Archaeology? Differences and Connections in Human Culture

Archaeology has been carried out in all the inhabited continents of the world providing information on life from the first inhabitants of an area to the present. Such a mass of information provides the basis for a broad comparative project on what it means to be human. We can also ask whether older frameworks for world history, featuring the Neolithic, Urban and Industrial Revolutions are still useful. I will conclude that in many cases these frameworks are not helpful. I will concentrate instead on how human cultures have both become different, but also have set up long-distance connections between them. As well as deep cultural differences, we can also see a number of features which unite all humans. I will provide an overview of some trends in world history, from my perspective, before focusing on a small number of cases in China and elsewhere.

第三讲:骏工程——中原与草原的文明互动

The Horsepower Project:Interactions between China and the Steppe

The nature of the interaction between China and the steppe in the second and first millennia BCE is a topic of growing interest. The Horsepower project focuses on three crucial topics: the movement of horses from the Shang onwards; the nature of metallurgy on both areas and the contrasting nature of the state in the Xiongnu and Qin cases. Some of our initial ideas have been proven wrong – that there would be large movements of horses from the steppe to China and metal in the opposite direction. Instead, interaction has been more subtle, as shown by emerging evidence from the ancient DNA of horses, but also a much clearer picture of the organisation of metal production in China. Nevertheless, horses were used across the region for riding, pulling chariots and for sacrifices. There contrasting uses allow new insights into why China is different from the steppe, while the two areas were also in interaction. We are half way through a six-year project and hope to set up more collaborations and conversations in China on these topics.
